Chapter 5

The next day, James woke up to find Ash and Shadow curled up next to him on one side, and Kenna and Stardust on the other. It was the first time they had all slept together in a group, and James could tell it would not be the last. All three dragons looked perfectly content and he could tell by their little ear flicks and tail jerks that they were sound asleep. Not wanting to disturb them, he kissed Kenna on the cheek and laid his head back down.

“Good morning,” Kenna whispered as she gazed back at him.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” he whispered.

“It’s fine, I was drifting in and out when you kissed me,” Kenna smiled.

“Were you having trouble sleeping?” James asked as he glanced at the dragons for a moment.

“No, I slept surprisingly well, even though we’re pinned in,” Kenna whispered in a tender voice.

“So you don’t mind having them sleep with us?”

“Not at all. I think it’s cute how you love them so much, and I can tell that they are quite fond of you as well.”

“I’m not the only one with a napping buddy,” James remarked as he glanced over at Stardust.

“I suppose not,” Kenna admitted as she gently ran her hand along her tail. When she stopped, Stardust nudged Kenna with her head in response to her touch without even waking up.

“I bet you never imagined that you would be sharing a den with dragons in it,” James smiled.

“Not in my wildest dreams,” Kenna admitted.

“So they are not the evil demons you once thought they were?” James remarked.

“No, they are amazing, but I still wouldn’t want a dragon angry with me. Even though they are intelligent and loving creatures, they also have all the passion and intensity of a wild beast,” Kenna remarked as looked over at Shadow, whose razor sharp teeth were clearly visible since his mouth was partially open.

“There is no doubt that they can be intimidating, but as long as they are not threatened, they are no more dangerous than any other creature. Just like us, they will protect their own, and kill anyone who tries to harm them. Since they have accepted us into their clan, there is little we could ever do to anger them, and even if we did, they would never harm us. Dragons are fiercely loyal to their kin, and since we have bonded with them, we are part of their family and they will protect us,” James replied.

“I admit that I was terrified when I first met Ash, but when I looked into his deep green eyes, I could tell he wasn’t a creature of the darkness.”

“Is that why you reached out and touched him.”

“I forced my self to face my fear so that it wouldn’t control me,” Kenna replied as she leaned over and patted Ash on the side. When she stopped, Ash opened his eyes and stared at her until she started patting him again.

“You woke him,” James scolded playfully.

“No she didn’t,” Ash interrupted.
